{"id":832,"date":"2017-03-16T23:56:54","date_gmt":"2017-03-16T23:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/allylitten.com\/?p=832"},"modified":"2022-03-09T19:10:35","modified_gmt":"2022-03-09T19:10:35","slug":"raceway-kicking-off-2017-season-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/allylitten.com\/index.php\/2017\/03\/16\/raceway-kicking-off-2017-season-saturday\/","title":{"rendered":"Raceway kicking off 2017 season Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CUMBERLAND \u2014 For nearly five years, the\u00a0Fairgo Half Mile at the\u00a0Allegany County Fairgrounds sat abandoned.<\/p>\n<p>That will change Saturday when The Greater Cumberland Raceway kicks off its 2017 season with the Mudd Classic 100 Enduro race.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know it&#8217;s going to work,&#8221; said Christa Kennell, the events coordinator for a\u00a0nonprofit citizen&#8217;s group promoting the speedway and organizing volunteer and fundraising efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve put too much time and money into it for it not to work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0consulting firm hired by Allegany County officials suggested\u00a0last year that the track be removed because it didn&#8217;t generate revenue.\u00a0The citizen&#8217;s group went to work from there, resurrecting the\u00a0track in less than six months.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Coming to the racetrack isn&#8217;t just about the racers,&#8221; said D.J. Troutman, a local racer and volunteer. &#8220;It&#8217;s about a family. I grew up going to the racetrack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s race will not be a traditional boxcar event. Cars won&#8217;t exceed 60 mph and the track will be wet in an effort to keep speeds down.<\/p>\n<p>Any car is eligible to race, organizers said. Registration and pit fees apply.<\/p>\n<p>About 60 racers have registered so far, and the race will happen rain, snow or shine.<\/p>\n<p>Gates open at noon\u00a0and racing will start at 4\u00a0p.m. The race will consist of 100 laps around the track or two\u00a0hours.<\/p>\n<p>There is an admission fee.<\/p>\n<p>At least 150 concrete barriers have been hauled to the site and installed to create an outer edge to the track.
